academic e-portfolio
Hi everyone,
Welcome to our newsletter. This week we've created a wonderful lesson on academic e-portfolios. The lesson is designed to help students produce academic learning goals (ALGs) to evaluate and assess their learning. The ALGs along with the evidence they provide are showcased in an academic e-portfolio, ideally over a number of weeks, a course or a semester. Blog page: www.academic-englishuk.com/e-portfolio

DEFINITION
What is an e-portfolio?
An academic e-portfolio is a collection of the student’s work that represents the student’s efforts and achievements in particular areas over a specified period. The learner is involved in the process as they are responsible for setting initial learning goals and selecting the best methods to achieve these goals through a process of reflection and evaluation (Academic English UK, 2023).

THE RATIONALE
The rationale of an academic e-portfolio is to:
  • promote reflection and critical thinking.
  • foster learner autonomy.
  • help students to see gaps in their learning.
  • encourage life-long learning.
  • provide a bridge between learning and assessment.
  • provide a digital record of achievement.
THE LESSON
The lesson contains a range of exercises to help them understand what an e-portfolio is and why it is used, what makes an effective goal, how to show evidence of learning and how to reflect and evaluate. It includes a template the students can use to start creating their e-portfolios.

E-Portfolio Evidence

Here is an example of portfolio evidence provided by students. The work clearly demonstrates the skills the students are working on and each week should show an improvement from the previous week.
