Academic punctuation
Hi everyone,
This week we've updated our academic punctuation worksheet with some new activities and it now includes academic referencing skills. We've also created a video that accompanies a free, simplified worksheet so you can get an idea of what the lesson includes (see below).

Punctuation is rarely taught in the classroom and we as teachers often expect students to have a clear knowledge on how to punctuate accurately. This, of course, is not always the case and students appreciate a lesson that helps them understand the structural marks of writing.

Punctuation Dictionary Definitions

The practice or system of using certain conventional marks or characters in writing or printing in order to separate elements and make the meaning clear, as in ending a sentence or separating clauses (Dictionary.com, 2023).

The act or practice of inserting standardised marks or signs in written matter to clarify the meaning and separate structural units (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2023).

The most common punctuation marks in English are: capital letters, full stops, question marks, commas, colons, semi-colons, exclamation marks and quotation marks (Cambridge Dictionary, 2023).
