Welcome to our newsletter. This week we've created five lessons (reading, writing, 2x listening, speaking) on dementia. This is a nice general topic lesson that can be used with any subject-based course as it looks at dementia from many different perspectives (medical, economic, business, social sciences...).

What is dementia?
Dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder that progresses over time and primarily impacts cognitive functions such as memory, thinking, and behaviour. It is caused by many different diseases which damage the nerve cells and generally affects people over the age of 60. There are four types of dementia with the most common being Alzheimer’s disease, followed by Vascular dementia, then Lewy body dementia and finally Frontotemporal dementia (Alzheimer’s Soc, 2020). In addition to memory loss problems, dementia can cause a whole range of other symptoms like sleeplessness, depression, anxiety, agitation, and other behavioural and psychological symptoms which make the disease incredibly difficult to treat (NIH, 2021).
|
The reading text discusses the types of dementia, its diagnosis, causes, treatment and prevention. The TED Talk listening texts focus on the belief that Alzheimer’s can be cured and how to care for people with dementia in a community setting.
