Lesson ideas for Week 1 on an academic English course

What should you do on the first week of an academic English course?

This blog / webpage provides a number of resources suitable for the first week on an EAP course (Presessional, Foundation, or University English study courses). It includes getting organised ideas, a getting-to-know you activity, classroom questions, and essential language revision.

Getting Organised

It’s often a good idea to get students organised right at the beginning of the course. Download PPT slides and adapt as appropriate for your course / group.

Getting Organised – Microsoft Office

Many U.K university computer systems are Microsoft Windows and students are expected to use Microsoft Office for writing, editing and uploading assignments. They are also expected to use Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations. In addition, many of the mail systems in U.K universities are Microsoft Outlook.

Microsoft Office is free for students (& staff) and can be easily downloaded through the university website using university usernames and passwords. Just search ‘Microsoft Office Download’.

Getting Organised – Timetables

It’s often a good idea to start thinking about and planning time. Time management is key to successful learning and meeting deadlines. Ask students to add their lessons to the timetable and then to think about when they will study, do homework and relax. REMEMBER timetables are evolutionary and should evolve and adapt over their course.

Introduction to the correction code

The correction code system is a good grading system and helps students learn from their mistakes. You grade their writing using a specific code and the student takes more responsibility in correcting errors. This worksheet introduces the code and practice activity to help consolidate their understanding of the symbols.

Correction Code

Teachers: This code can be used to correct student’s work. Underline the mistake and use one of the symbols to indicate problem. Students correct the mistake using the code and return to teacher to check. TEACHER MEMBERSHIP INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIP
