Process Writing
What is process writing?
Process writing provides a step-by-step description of how something operates or is produced. The explanation includes a range of writing skills:
- Describe the process in detail paying attention to the sequence of events (e.g., chronological order).
- Use time linkers to highlight when a stage starts or finishes (e.g., to begin with, next, afterwards, etc…).
- Describe the main features (e.g., places, time periods, stages, etc…).
- Note any additional information given in the diagram (e.g., pollution, issues, etc…).
Lesson Notes
Aim: To equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively document technical processes.
Time: 90 minutes.
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Distribute the ‘Process Writing’ booklet. Students share their ideas and knowledge on the topic (e.g., nuclear power) with a partner or small groups.
Task 1 (10 minutes)
- Students label a diagram with the words from the table.
Task 2 (10 minutes)
- Students work together to explain the process using the diagram.
Task 3: Language Reference Guide (10 minutes)
- Students read the document in preparation for the process writing stage.
Task 4: Process Writing (40 minutes)
- Students look at a detailed visual representation of energy production.
- Set a time limit of 40 minutes and a word limit of 200-250 words.
Process Writing Language Guide
The present simple active and present simple passive tenses are used to describe processes and how things work along with time sequencing words and specific verbs/nouns.
