Reading & Argument Essay Writing

Reading & Writing Practice

This blog provides a great lesson to improve students’ ability to read, identify key arguments of for/against and synthesise the arguments in an argument essay. Students practise their paraphrasing skills and in-text referencing. The material includes two texts, outline plans and a model essay.

Argument Organisation Structure

An argument essay  is generally organised in two ways: block and point-by-point. A Block structure is where the two main body paragraphs are divided separately into for or against. A Point-by-Point structure is where each main body paragraph has a counter-argument followed by an argument. (see below)

Paragraph structure block or point-by-point

Outline Plan

These two argument essay outline plans help students to identify the key components in an argument essay. They focus on introductions (link), thesis statements (link), main body paragraphing (link), in-text referencing (link)and conclusions (link).

Mergers & Acquisition Argument Essay Writing
